I know what there for but do i need one ?can i make one out of steel or stainless just solid with no rubber?will my motor implode?whats the best way to pin it to the crank without puling the motor apart or does the crank have to come out?the one i got hasnt got enough meat to mount any thing to it

yes you do need one, because you intend on revving the engine fairly hard, its a must.forgive my ignorance but what style is the stock one?the only time you can
get away with not using one is in a blown application where the blower belt
soaks up the harmonics, even then there is a lot opinion on that.

you dont need a balancer if your engine is internally balanced .you have to run a neutral balance flex plate.so to go down that road you will have to rip the engine apart..the best way to pin your balancer is to run a drill parallel to the crank and drill between the crank and the balancer oposite the keyway. 5/16 drill will be ok .then drill in about an inch then belt a solid oversize pin in the hole .dont use a roll pin i dont think there dense enough ..cheers gary..

hay flat
the stock one is great for a car but it got a cross made out of cast iron and its only 7 mm thick and 15mm wide by the time i machined it flat it would be 5-6mm thick.i could make a disc to fit inside to mount the jack shaft but i dont think it would hold up and i dont think it would be fun with whats left of the balancer loose in the boat
there are some flash race ones in nz but there made of alloy and they are bolted together but it looks like the outside is the ballencer i will keep lookin

hay gary
how do you reckon i will go drillin threw a forged crank would i be able to do it by hand or would i have to mount the engine in the mill some how?

drill by hand will work as long as you take your time..thats how i did mine.you will get a bigger section of the hole in the balancer but thats ok..it still works..your other option is to make the keyways larger in the balancer and the crank..pick the easiest option..your not turning very big numbers in the engine are you....im dooing the electrics on mine now..finished all the dry sump plumbing .and the fuel system..should be able to kick it in the guts real soon..cheers ..what engine did you decide to run???

bloody 8 carbies ..wont that be fun to tune..lol..keep a careful eye on the colour of your plugs when your tuning it..use a peice of heater hose to balance all your carbs..if you dont have a set of vacume gauges.. i take it that your going direct drive of the snout is that right??..there a good engine but the bucket and shimms let them down a bit 2 reasons there a pain in the arse to get the clearance right..and they dont allow for a bigger base circle cams if you want to really kick arse...other than that there damn near indestructable..cheers..

Doug, an eight cylinder vacuum gauge set, now that would be worth seeing. I have four gauge set which I used to use to tune motorbikes with. I could get them to purr like a kitten.
